Don’t you love easy desserts! Something that you can put together quick and takes almost no time and effort. Don’t get me wrong, I love detailed and time-consuming desserts, but there’s something great about a dessert that takes me less than 10 minutes to make. This crisp is one of those desserts!
A crisp is very similar to a crumble (I posted a crumble last week). And many people actually get them mixed up often. Just like a crumble, fruit is the bottom layer of this dessert. However, a crisp has a crunchier topping than the crumble - Normally because it includes oats in the topping. A crumble has a more soft, crumbly topping. I know… it’s confusing. But don’t worry if you don’t get it. It’s not that big :). The only important thing is that you enjoy the desserts!
Although a crisp is a very easy and simple dessert, by just looking at this dessert you could never tell it only took 10 minutes to put together. It's such a beautiful, yet rustic dessert.
When I decided to bake a crisp, I asked Steve what fruit he thought I should include. I love all types of crisps - apple, strawberry, pineapple, pear - so I can never decide which kind to make. It's much easier to ask Steve :). He decided on pear... And oh what a great decision!
The pear has a mild sweetness that goes great in this dessert. When baked, the pears get soft, which is a great contrast to the crispy oat topping.
This pear crisp was delicious and satisfying. Exactly what we wanted for dessert! Steve and I couldn’t get enough – we kept going back for more.
Top this dessert with a creamy ice cream and your set.
Enjoy this warm, crispy, soft dessert :)!

Makes: 1 9x12 filled Baking Dish
For the Fruit Filling
8 Pears
1 tsp. Orange Zest
1 tbsp. Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice
½ cup Sugar
¼ cup All Purpose Flour
1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
½ tsp. Ground Nutmeg
For the Topping
1 ½ cups All Purpose Flour
¾ cup Sugar
¾ cup Brown Sugar
½ tsp. Salt
1 cup Old Fashioned Oats/Oatmeal
1 cup (2 sticks) Unsalted Butter
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
To make the fruit filling, core and cut the pears into slices. Place the cut pears into a large bowl. Add the orange zest, orange juice, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss the mixture until the fruit is completely coated. Pour the fruit into a 9x12 baking dish. Set aside.
To make the crump topping, cut the butter into 1-inch cubes. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the flour, sugar, brown sugar, oatmeal, and butter. Beat until the butter is no large than the size of small peas, about 1 minute. With your hands, squish together the mixture to create large crumbles. Top the fruit evenly with the crumb topping.
Place the baking dish on a baking sheet and bake in the oven until the top is golden brown and the fruit it bubbling, about 50 minutes to 1 hour. Cool until warm or room temperature. Serve topped with ice cream if desired. Enjoy :)!
